10 pop albums from 2016 you need to hear : No.1

The Ramona Flowers - Part time spies
The new retrowave scene truly exploded with the Drive soundtrack from 2011, I mean who doesn´t love College featuring Electric Youth´s stunning A Real Hero.
It´s all about the 80´s coming back with all the right elements, where films like Breakfast Club, Top Gun, St.Elmos Fire and Karate Kid ruled the theatres and we were playing airkeyboards to albums with Ultravox, Howard Jones, The Buggles and Human League.
London based The Ramona Flowers are a brilliant new act that sets the bar really high with their new album Part Time Spies.
Put on your Miami Vice costume and wear those sunglasses at night.

10 pop albums from 2016 you need to hear : No.2

Night Riots - Love Gloom
Visit the Night Riots restaurante where the chefs are making the most gorgeous soup of electronic dance beats, indie rock and softer pop, reminiscent of 80´s new romantic bands.
Imagine Duran Duran meets The Killers with a touch of Interpol and you´ll get the 15 track album Love Gloom.
Night Riots could very well be the next big thing, they´ve got the ammo and you´re the target. Once you´re hit, you´re a Night Riots fan forever.
Now let´s dance.

Drawing North - El Dorado
The major label debut from Australian band Drawing North is a grande alternative pop affair that can be slightly addictive, this is what you get if you mix Savage Garden, Walk Off The Earth and OneRepublic. Interesting right?
El Dorado is an album you can´t be without, it opens rather impressive with the singles Ars Armatoria, Save your love, Fire eyes and Forevermore. Who said feel-good pop? I did!
These Canberra based dudes collaborated with producer James Wisner who brought out the best in the band, and well.....Joel Madden of Good Charlotte is a fan.
Aussie pop in 2016 is healthy and well.

10 pop albums from 2016 you need to hear : No.4

The Midnight - Endless Summer
What happens when a songwriter from Los Angeles and a producer from Denmark share the same love for 80´s music, well they team up and put their heads together to create some wonderful synthwave songs.
Tyler Lyle and Tim McEvan are The Midnight, a magnificent duo that will make the listener think of the days when the soundtracks were done by Giorgio Moroder and Harold Faltermeyer and Miami Vice showed on TV.
There´s even a song called Crockett´s revenge on their new album Endless summer, the more upbeat Jason is flirting with Flashdance and the smile just won´t leave my face.
But I´m saving the best for last, the superb The Comeback Kid is without doubt one of the greatest songs of 2016.

10 pop albums from 2016 you need to hear : No.5

Laleh - Kristaller
The world is waiting for Laleh and her heartfelt pop songs, she´s already a big star in Sweden and had a major breakthrough internationally earlier this year on American Idol where Laleh did a duet with Adam Lambert (Queen) on the song Welcome to the show.
Sweden is definitely one of the top nations when it comes to producing first class pop artists/songwriters with names like ABBA, Ace of Base, Roxette, Max Martin, Salem Al Fakir etc.
Laleh was born in Iran but grew up and went to school in Russia, at the age of 9 her family moved to Sweden where she learned to play several instruments and started writing her own music.
The self titled debut album was released in 2005 and recently her 6th album Kristaller (Crystals) came out which is an adorable pop album filled with self-confidence and positive tunes.
How can you not love this woman?!

10 pop albums from 2016 you need to hear : No.6

Anti Anti - Conundrum
The new project from Apollo frontman Claus Hoffman will please any fan of 80´s synth, the debut album Conundrum is a real charming new wave-ish synth pop affair a la Depeche Mode meets The Killers.
Not so long ago, I posted a feature on Palace of Rock of the best electro rock bands in Denmark. That list was done before Anti Anti´s arrival but with the result in my hands, this band truly belong on that list too.

10 pop albums from 2016 you need to hear : No.7

Dúné - Delta
These Danes knows what quality means, their 4th studio album Delta is a step away from 80´s synth and instead they moved closer to the electro pop of Twenty One Pilots.
You can´t argue with the band hooking up on a trendy sound but they do it good, real good.
Let´s just hope they won´t forget about their amazing past completely because the tasteful blend of synth pop and modern alternative pop can be as irresistable as soft ice cream with coco-flavor.

10 pop albums from 2016 you need to hear : No.8

Chloe Wildman - Unbroken
A young hitmaker is on the rise, Chloe Wildman is a super talented new artist from Maryland in the same vein as Katy Perry and Pink.
Her brilliant debut EP Unbroken should have the major labels standing in line to sign her, all I know is that these songs should be on rotation on every radio station from Los Angeles to Tokyo.
Catchy just got a new name, it´s Chloe-atchy!

Step Rockets - Future Nature
Not only Justin Timberlake will make you feel like dancing, the Minneapolis based Step Rockets will make you put on those dancing shoes in no time when you listen to Future Nature.
The band has created a cool blend of indie and charming 80´s pop, they sound both 2016 and 1984 at the same time if you know what I mean.
They are flirting with bands like Wham and The Script which is really cool and I feel all happy inside when I listen to this album.

The Fever The Focus - Fading Lights
The two main songwriters Alex Davies and Ed Minton from Elliot Minor returns with their new band The Fever The Focus, it´s good to have these lads back making good piano driven pop music.
There are moments that bring thoughts to Everything Everything, Ronan Keating and even Elton John.
Fading Lights doesn´t seem to be the strongest musical experience at first but it slowly grows into be a real good friend in the dark autumn.

Night Riots post Love Gloom album sampler

Long before he formed Night Riots with a group of childhood friends in Templeton, California, vocalist Travis Hawley spent his earliest years moving around Europe. It was a rainy, foggy place to grow up, filled with grays, greens and blues. Those colors left a permanent mark on Hawley, who came to California years later with a head full of moody melodies and atmospheric arrangements.

A sleepy town located 25 miles east of the California coast and possessing a single traffic light, Templeton offered up few distractions for its residents, making it the perfect place to start a band. "Music was our focus," Hawley says, "and everything revolved around that. That's what the activity was. Every time you got out of school, you were racing home to play music with your friends."

Those "friends" were drummer Rico Rodriguez, who grew up in nearby Fresno, and three of Hawley's classmates from school: bassist Mikel Van Kranenburg and guitarists Nick Fotinakes and Matt DePauw. Armed with synthesizers, Stratocasters and a gaggle of razor-sharp hooks, the guys began crafting a sound that was rooted not in the sunshine and sea spray of California, but in the gloom, grit and glamour of some make-believe country in Eastern Europe. It was a sound that transported its listeners to another place, a sound that conjured up memories of the 1980s while still pushing toward new, uncharted territory.

In other words, it didn't really sound like anybody. It just sounded like Night Riots.
Recommended if you like Interpol, The Killers and Duran Duran.
Night Riots´ new album Love Gloom drops tomorrow, check out the album sampler here.

Electronic popster Sollario drop new single

Vivid colors contrast with melancholic lyrics and mesmerizing beats in“Drops,” the visually stimulating video from electronic popster Solarrio. Described as “an attempt to numb his pain,” “Drops” is the first single from Solarrio’s forthcoming ’80s-inspired self-titled EP, available January of 2017 via Believe Digital.

Sounding like a blend of present-day electronic acts such as The Weeknd and the warm analog sounds of retro ’80s music, “Drops” features melancholic lyrics that eventually give way to the soft glow of feel-good modern beats. According to Solarrio, “Drops” is his attempt to deal with failure and heartbreak.

Future pop artists Covenant invites you to the blinding dark

There is no Berlin Wall to defiantly dance on any more.
We live in dark, confusing times and Covenant wrote an album about how that makes them feel. In a world that’s stopped making sense, we need to learn how to see in the dark and ”The Blinding Dark” is a triumphant embrace of the strength and resilience of the soul. It’s the dystopian, unforgiving music of the reflective shadows we all carry within us, but often lack the courage to take a good look at. It’s implosive instead of explosive, fuelled by cold fury rather than a roaring fire, as beautiful as a collapsed star.
”The Blinding Dark” will make you feel the outrage and the sorrow of a band that refuses to smooth things over, put on a brave face and reach for false hopes. It’s staring into the darkness with eyes wide shut.
It’s also a new chapter for Covenant. The trio that became a quintet hasn’t sounded this focused and so on target since the legendary album ”Sequencer” 22 years ago. But there is nothing nostalgic about ”The Blinding Dark”. It steers like an unstoppable Nautilus through the black waters, straight towards the future, never looking back.
Welcome to the void.
"The Blinding Dark” will be released in several different versions: CD, vinyl and extended artwork all produced directly by the band.
The Psychonaut EP bonus material consists of up to two hours of unique instrumental music recorded at a private, live improvisation jam session. All to be released world wide 4th of November 2016.

Vaness with a change of heart

Vaness aLegacy (Toronto, Canada) release debut single Change of heart!
We all know how it goes; you fall in love, you get hurt, you get your heart broken, and sometimes you feel like you'll never love again. But then one day you wake the fuck up and realize its only as bad as you let it be. That's what this song represents. It's the second chance you give yourself to love and to feel love.
Vaness aLegacy worked with Director Walu of Capitol Agent Media to capture the raw passion of the song and translate it into video format. Keeping it simple, pointed and focused, -we were able to represent the duality one faces while having a change of heart, says Vaness.

-The video starts as I wake up to face another day. I must look myself in the mirror over some issues that are weighing heavy on my heart. I decide that I must make a change.
